A history of Commitment To Service
Our story began in 1953 when Gene Burke and Orrie Tubbs first opened Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home at the 400 Block West Stephenson in Freeport. Gene and Orrie had been professional acquaintances both working at local area funeral homes; before joining into a partnership and opening Burke- Tubbs Funeral Home.
In 1958, the funeral home was relocated to its current location at 504 North Walnut Avenue in Freeport which was built from the ground up. Gene’s son John Burke a 1969 Aquin High School graduate; joined the funeral home in 1974 after graduating from the University of Minnesota Program of Mortuary Science. In 1975, Gene and Orrie added a second location at 203 Third Avenue in Forreston. By 1979, Robert Burke a 1974 Freeport High School graduate; joined the funeral home after graduating from Worsham College of Mortuary Science.
After several years of service Gene and Orrie retired from the everyday operations which they entrusted to John and Robert, but Gene and Orrie could still be found at the funeral home assisting when needed.
Today, Burke-Tubbs is blessed to have three generations of our family serving the Freeport and Forreston Communities with Gene’s grandsons; Andy a 1999 Aquin High School graduate joined the funeral home full time in 2007, Brian a 2001 Freeport High School and 2010 SIU Carbondale Mortuary Science graduate; worked on and off through-out school since 1997, and Aaron a 2009 Freeport High School, 2014 SIU Edwardsville Business, and Worsham College of Mortuary Science joined following school; working alongside John and Robert providing the very best service to those who grieve.
What we do is more than “just a job”. It is a calling to serve families during one of life’s most difficult times. We are honored to be with you and pledge ourselves to do everything we can to meet your needs and to “Honor the Life” of your loved one in a special way that truly reflects the person they were in life.
