Walter H. Maass, age 89 of Freeport, IL died Sunday, December 1, 2019 at AMITA Healthcare in Elk Grove Village. He was born on December 7, 1929 in Chicago, IL to Walter T. and Loretta Dahms Maass. On May 8, 1954 he married Gwenneth G. Berns. Mr. Maass attended Northwestern University and spent his career in the Law Departments of the Burlington Route, Milwaukee Road and Soo Line Railroads. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War with the 35th Division, 75th Air Defense. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and the American Legion. He was a willing volunteer for numerous church and community projects through the years. He enjoyed automobiles, working on home projects, and collecting coins, stamps and railroad memorabilia. He was an avid Chicago Black Hawks fan. Most of all, he cherished the time spent with family and friends. Walter is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, a daughter Kathryn (Michael) Whitted, sons James and Gregory, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Neil. Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 6, 2019 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Freeport. Reverend Kenneth Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at St.Thomas. Internment at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery Garnavillo, IA.
