Virgil Coomes

Virgil J. Coomes, 89, died on January 8th 2022 in FHN Memorial Hospital following an extended illness from the Covid-19 Virus. Virgil was born in Philpot Kentucky on July 18 ,1932. He was a 1950 graduate of Shannon High School and a retired farmer. While cruising around Lanark High School with his friend Gerald, they stopped and met a couple young ladies. One of those young ladies became the love of his life. He married Rebecca A. Brantner on August 18, 1951. Their life journey together lasted 68 years with Rebecca preceding him in death on October 24, 2019. Virgil loved his family, nature, and being a good neighbor. He was a loyal Chicago Bears and Cubs fan throughout his life. He was neat, organized and loved sending and receiving Christmas cards each holiday season. He is survived by two children; Mark (Kathie Doty) of Venice, Florida and Cathy Coomes of Safety Harbor, Florida; two grandchildren, Anthony (Shannon) Coomes and Andrea Coomes Swanson; four great-grandchildren, Simone, Gabrielle, Dane, and Miles; two sisters-in-law, Mary Henson and Carolee Zuck-Brantner; and two "Freeport granddaughters", Katelyn Copus and Alyson Copus-Graham. In addition to his wife, Virgil was preceded in death by his mother, Hilda V. (Komischke) Coomes, his father Joseph O. Coomes, his step-mother Marie (Korf) Coomes, and many brothers and sisters-in-law. The family would like to thank the agencies and the individuals who helped our father stay in his home over the last two years of his life. The agencies include; Senior Resource Center and FHN Supportive Care Network staff. His caregivers-Linda and Kelly. His friends; Darryl, Clint, Deb, Barb, Phil, and Terry. Your visits, meals, and telephone calls enriched our father's life and made him feel safe and cared for. Lastly to the neighbors in Town and Country Estates "thank you" for all the waves. Cremation rites were accorded. A private family memorial will be held later in the summer. Events Details are pending.
