Today we mourn the loss of a very intelligent, compassionate man of conviction. Thomas Nettles was born January 21, 1944 the son of Harold and Garnet (Jeffrey) Nettles and passed away at home on January 14, 2017 after an extended illness. Tom graduated from Freeport High School in 1962, where he participated in sports and theatre. He graduated from University of Illinois where his talented voice allowed him to tour and perform in Europe with the Glee Club. He then graduated from Chicago Kent Law School and became licensed as an attorney. His love of life and thirst for knowledge led him to travel across the United States and settle in California which, in his heart, always remained his true home. Upon returning to the Midwest Tom became a manager at Rockford Country Club, owned and operated the Plantation Restaurant in Rockford, and resumed the practice of law. Tom based his law practice on the philosophy which his father instilled in him of "Noblesse Oblige". He was thankful for his accomplishments and always tried to help those in need. Tom practiced law in Freeport from 1987-2016. On October 4, 1986 Tom married Judy Schroeder. Together they created and shared a rich and unique life. In their 30 years, traveling was greatly enjoyed. From the delta of Africa to the tiny island of Bora Bora, Tom's fondest love remained winter in Mexico. Many hours were spent collecting antiques and artwork, and restoring a beautiful home. Tom was a gourmet chef and wine connoisseur. Many dinner parties and holiday gatherings were hosted at the Nettles home, often ending with great conversation around the fireplace. Tom loved animals. The farm girl in Judy led him to raise and breed alpacas, which led to the creation of Simon's Spring Alpaca Farm. His special pets were Blazer, Princess, Simone, and 27 year old Baby Bird. Tom valued education and was proud to have served on the Library Foundation Board. Tom truly loved golf and flying. He was blessed to have wonderful friends with which to enjoy these passions. Tom's memberships included: Embury United Methodist Church, Freeport Country Club, Illinois and Stephenson County Bar Associations, Aircraft Owner and Pilot Association, Alpaca Owner and Breeder Association. Tom is survived by his wife, Judy, brothers Al and Steve, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sharon Lohmeier. Whether it be debating a point of view, sharing great food and wine, or accepting assistance when in need, many lives have been touched by Thomas Nettles and he will be greatly missed. A celebration of Tom's life will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 15, 2017 at The Freeport Club, 1614 S Park Blvd, Freeport, IL 61032. A memorial has been established in his memory.
