Theodore C. Smith

Theodore Charles Smith (TC) 89, of Freeport, passed away, August 28, 2016 at Oakley Court in Freeport. He was born September 28, 1926 in Freeport, IL the son of George W. and Mary (Gunther) Smith. Ted enlisted in the United States Navy in November 1944 and served in World War II for 2 years. He then returned and went to work for the Illinois Central Railroad for the next 40 plus years. He married Joyce Heitzman in Freeport on March 15, 1952. His memberships included the Eagles Club, VFW Club of Port Isabel, Texas, and he was one of the Founding members of Illinois Central Sportsman Club back in September 1974. The ICS Club was where he spent most of his retirement years, mowing, pruning trees, and helping keep the place looking nice. He always had a project that needed to be done. He loved the place with all of his heart. Ted was an avid bowler during his younger years and attended many National Bowling conferences, many with his son. Theodore is survived by his son Steven D (Janan) Smith of Freeport, IL, one grandson Jedediah (Nikki) Smith Cherry Valley, IL , two granddaughters Sara(Chuck) Downing Freeport, IL and Rachel (Nik) Mauck, Sherman Oaks, CA. He has 7 great grandchildren, Ben, Dominique, and Elliot Downing, Madison, Olivia, and Landon Smith, and Nolan Mauck. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, a brother, two sisters, and a son. A memorial service with be held Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Gardner Cronk officiating at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9:00am until the time of service.
