Sylvia "Sue" Gorman, 84 years old, passed away surrounded by her family after a brief illness.
She was born November 3, 1939, the daughter of Faye L. Schrader and Herbert Charles Schrader. On June 25, 1960, she married G. Michael Gorman in Chicago and they had five children and eight grandchildren.
Sue attended Northwestern University from 1957-1959, and graduated at age 55 from DePaul University in 1995 with a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts.
As a longtime resident of Freeport, Sue was active in community affairs. She was a Reporter for the Freeport Journal Standard from 1976 to 1983, where she won first place in the United Press International contest for best news story of 1979, “Freeport Hotel Fire”.
Sue was an elected member of the Highland Community College Board of Trustees from 1978-1982, and an Executive Director of the Freeport YWCA from 1985-1988. She was also the former President of the League of Women Voters and the YWCA Board of Directors and was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader.
Sue and Mike later moved back to Chicago, where Sue worked for the Illinois Department of Human Services Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse from 1989 until her retirement in 2015, for which she received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Drug Enforcement Administration for outstanding contributions in the field of drug law enforcement.
Sue was an avid sports fan that closely followed Chicago teams and the NFL. She was a supporter of the arts and a fervent reader of news, politics, and current events. She loved her family very much and focused most of her time and attention on them.
Sue is survived by her children, Susan Winstead, Shawn (Allan) Novak, Stephanie (David) Winnekins, Michael (Alta) Gorman and Timothy (Kristie) Gorman, her grandchildren Staci (Jeff) Bianchetta, Megan (Logan) Jerkins, Shanna Winnekins, Steven Winstead, Mackenzie (Christopher) Jobs, Gannon Novak, Gavin Gorman, Alexandra Gorman, and her great-grandchildren Hayden, Reid and Cole Bianchetta, Rowan and Theo Jerkins and Evelyn Jobs. She is also survived by her cousin Lynda (Jim) Jenkins and family.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Faye L. Schrader and husband G. Michael Gorman.
Funeral mass will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday December 16, 2023 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church with Father Peter Snieg officiating. A visitation will be held from 9:30 A.M. until the time of mass at the church. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum in Freeport.
