Susie was born in Freeport, Illinois to Florence “Doc” and Magdalena “Madge” Sullivan and was the second of their five children. She attended Aquin Catholic High School in Freeport and later attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. After completing college, she married her high school sweetheart, although they later divorced, and had two children, Todd and Katie Hines. In 1971 the family settled in West Des Moines, Iowa where she spent her time as a mother and homemaker. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for many decades, following in her family’s proud Irish Catholic tradition. In the mid 1980’s she purchased a home in Punta Gorda, Florida, where she enjoyed the winter months and made many wonderful friends. As her health declined, Susie chose to move to Fort Collins, Colorado, to be closer to her daughter, Katie. She spent two happy years at The Winslow, an independent living community for older adults.

Sue was a loving daughter, mother, sister, auntie and friend. She was at her best when helping care for her immediate and extended family and friends. She had a very kind and generous heart and was considered a second mother by many of the children in her life. Given the opportunity, she would do anything she could to make someone’s life a little better, and her greatest joy came from making deep and long-lasting connections with others. She loved to laugh and always spoke her mind.

Sue is survived by her son, Todd Hines, (Stephanie Chenard) of Alameda, CA and daughter, Katie Hines (Vince Naccarati) of Fort Collins, CO; one grandson, Desmond Hines of Alameda, CA; her sister Madge Sullivan of Freeport, IL; two sisters-in-law, Peg Phillips of Des Moines, IA, and Bette Jo Sullivan of Alexandria, VA; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Patrick and Michael Sullivan and sister-in-law, Karen Sullivan.

In Sue's memory memorial donations can be made to the Sjogren’s Foundation.
