Steven R. Mooney

Steven Robert Mooney, 63, of Freeport died Friday in his home, surrounded by his family following an extended illness. He was born February 14, 1950 in Freeport the son of William W. and Marian J. (Strohecker) Mooney. Steven was a 1968 graduate of Freeport High School. He then served with the United States Navy, (CTR3) Petty Officer 3rd Class. From 1969-1973 serving in Viet Nam. Mr. Mooney married Adrienne Marie Winter on January 22, 1978 at Rockton, Illinois. A 28 year veteran of the Freeport Fire Department, he was Deputy Chief and also University of Illinois State Fire Instructor. He was a member of New Beginnings Church, where he taught bible class every week. Steven enjoyed following the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs. He loved cooking for his family and at the Firehouse. He loved fishing, playing toon town with his grandchildren. He loved growing, sharing and eating his chili peppers. He is survived by his wife, his mother, Marian Mooney; of Freeport, his son, Aaron (Donna) Mooney; of Freeport, his daughter, LuAnne ( Sean Thurman) Mooney; of Freeport, his brother, William Mooney of Peoria, Ill. and his sister, Jeri (Douglas) Broge of Cedarville. Three grandchildren, Devon Mooney, Haley Mooney and Sean Thurman, Jr. His in laws, Henry 'Corky' and Virginia Winter of Freeport. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Mark Mooney. A funeral service will be held Friday, 1:00 P.M. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport. Rev. Mark Vlad will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday, 4:00-7:00 P.M. at Burke-Tubbs. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Freeport. A memorial has been established in his name. Please sign the online guestbook at www.burketubbs.com.
