Sherilyn "Sherie" R. Marten

Sherilyn "Sherie" Rae Marten passed away surrounded by family on March 8, 2021. Sherie was born to Wayne and Carolyn Mitchell in Freeport IL on January 10, 1950 and grew up in Lena, IL. Sherie attended Lena High School where she was a cheerleader. She graduated from Kishwaukee College with a nursing degree and was a pediatric nurse for FHN for 32 years. Sherie married Steve "Mort" Marten on September 24, 1976. Together they established the iconic Mort's Bar and Grill in downtown Freeport. She finished her career as the Director of NICAA Head Start in Freeport and retired in 2015. Sherie and Mort loved to vacation with their family. Some of her favorite memories were the family trips to watch the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field and visiting her sister and brother-in-law in Minnesota. Sherie was an avid reader and crocheter. She loved to crochet anything from hats and blankets to dolls and stuffed animals for her children and grandchildren. Sherie especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Sherie was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Jill Marten. Surviving are her husband, Mort, of Freeport, IL; sisters Debra (Steve) James of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and Gwen (Keith) Komenieki of Indianapolis, IN; daughter Autumn (William) Wagner of Freeport, IL; sons Doug (Tanya) Kohn, Jay (Tiffany) Marten, Benjamin (Sarah) Marten, and Michael (Caley) Marten, all of Freeport, IL; granddaughters and grandsons Alexandria Kohn, Jordan Keyes, Luke Kohn, Jayce Kohn, Craig Wagner, Ethan Eilders, Ellie Marten, Max Marten, Vivienne Marten, Eileen Marten, and Fitzpatrick Marten. A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 14, 2021 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, IL. Social distancing and masks are required. A memorial fund has been established for The Epilepsy Foundation in honor of Jill Marten.
