Ruth “Ruthie” Kunkle Kempthorne, age 93, was called home peacefully on November 11, 2024 after a hard fought battle with cancer and a brief illness. She was born in Freeport, IL on February 3, 1931.
The daughter of Russell and Frances Kunkle “Lamia”. She was employed at Micro Switch for 31 years. Soon after retirement, she brought smiles and her unique personality to the customers of Wendy’s for 23 years.
A love of gambling found her traveling to Las Vegas annually for over 30 years with slots and Texas Hold’em as her favorites. Discovering the joy of cruise ships, equipped with casinos, she embarked on multiple cruising adventures in the Caribbean.
As a USBC recognized member, bowling served as an outlet for competition, female bonding, and fun. Bowling on leagues and traveling nationwide for tournaments for over 65 years.
A member of the Eagles and Moose Club for most of her life, she enjoyed the many friendships, gatherings and events. She rarely missed an opportunity to enjoy the live bands and dancing the night away.
She was a gifted crocheter providing an array of apparel, baby blankets, and afghans. When you were in Ruthie’s kitchen you could count on a delicious homemade meal and a fresh cup of coffee. With soup, banana bread, and applesauce offered to all.
An avid dog lover and Human Society advocate, Ruth adored her best friends: Babe, Jessie Red, Hannah, and her current beloved Sadie.
Ruth is survived by her children Rosanne (Jay) Tuttle; Mike Kempthorne; Terese Kempthorne; and Lisa Kempthorne; brothers Glen (Jan) Kunkle; Carl (Jo Ellen) Kunkle; grandchild Maria Kempthorne; great grandchildren Dylon and Alivia. She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne of 71 years; her parents; and her brother Russell.
A visitation and memorial mass will be held Tuesday, November 19th at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Freeport; with visitation at 9:30 a.m. and mass at 10:30 a.m. Cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to Friends Forever Humane Society, or FHN Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center, Freeport.
