Ruth Oramay Detert

Ruth OraMay Detert, 86, of Freeport, died Sunday, November 12, 2017 at the Stephenson Nursing Home. Ruth was born May 15, 1931 in Mitchell, South Dakota, the daughter of Herbert H. and Lydia W. (Schroeder) Stahnke. Growing up Ruth attended schools in Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma where her father served as an Army Chaplain during World War II. Ruth was a 1950 graduate of Villisca High School (Iowa). In 1952, she earned her Associate of Science from Concordia College (Seward, Nebraska). In 1966 she finished her Bachelor of Science in teaching from Peru State College (Peru, Nebraska). She married George R. Detert on October 10, 1964 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clarinda, Iowa. Mr. Detert passed away June 4, 1984. Ruth was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Freeport where her activities included Sunday school teacher, LWML, Miriam Society, Altar Guild, Greeter, and as a shut in visitor. She was a past member of Freeport Women's Club, American Association of University Women, and Winneshiek playhouse. Ruth taught at schools in Texas, Nebraska, Iowa, Center School (Freeport), Kindergarten early childhood at Amity Day Care, and was a substitute for FSD 145. Surviving are son, Robert Detert of Freeport; daughter, Deborah (Robert) Lincoln of Freeport; sisters, Joyce Erickson of Iowa and Candus (Albert) Zambone of New Jersey; grandchildren, Jennifer Lincoln, Benjamin Lincoln, and Nathan Lincoln. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends, and her church family. Ruth loved her family and friends and hearing about their lives. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, George on June 4, 1984. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday November 18, 2017 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Rev. Stephen Precht will officiate. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Friday November 17, 2017 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport. There will also be a visitation Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, and American Heart Association as Ruth lived with a heart condition since childhood.
