Robert E. Nickel, 81, of Elizabeth, died Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at F.H.N. Memorial Hospital. Robert was born on August 16, 1933 in Waddams Grove, Illinois, the son of Frederick and Freida (Lewin) Nickel. Robert served in the United States Army in Germany from 1953-1955. He owned and operated Nickel's Farm, Drainage & Excavating. He was the Wards Grove Township Road Commissioner for 12 years, and also farmed and worked for Atwood Manufacturing. Robert married Viola Schuldt on November 22, 1952 in Stockton, IL,. Robert enjoyed visiting with family and friends, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Viola Nickel of Elizabeth; three sons, Ronald (Kay) Nickel of Fayetteville, N.C., Richard (Debbie) Nickel of Freeport, and Dale Nickel of Monroe; two daughters, Kay (Brent) Offenheiser of Elizabeth and Connie (Lee) Rees of Freeport; brother, Roscoe Nickel of Freeport; sister, Ellinoir Musser of Stockton, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 5 step-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and sister, five brothers, Alfred, Wayne, Harold, Roger, and Ted; two sisters, Irene Stiefel and Marian Gray; and granddaughter, Melissa Nickel. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday June 13, 2015 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Pastor David Vidler will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
