Richard J. Holbert

Richard J. Holbert, 82 of Freeport passed away Monday February 28, 2022 after a lengthy illness. Richard was born March 15, 1939 to James and Louella (Kortemeier) Holbert in Freeport. Richard was a 1957 graduate of Freeport High School and a lifelong farmer. Richard married Carol Stearns on January 14, 1983 at their home. Richard was employed by Moll Hog Farms for the last 33 years and worked in the fields until the fall of 2021. In his younger years he enjoyed tractor pulling with his Oliver Super 99. He previously owned and operated Holbert's Sunoco in Freeport and was an engine builder at Oregon Auto Supply. He later owned Richard's Race Engines, building late model and modified race car motors for area racers as well as his son Scott Holbert and son-in-law Mel Abels. He enjoyed following all of the racers he built motors for at area tracks. He is survived by his long time partner Judy Cassidy and his sister Mary Lou Moll. His children, Julie (Mel) Abels, Scott Holbert, Meri (Greg) Sizemore, Molly (Joel) Plum and Charlie Holbert. Judy's children and their families, Tom (Nadine) Cassidy, Juli (Tom) Schmerse, Kevin (Kristie) Cassidy and Mike (Kim) Cassidy. His grandchildren, Lori (Luke) Scharenbroich, Melissa (Dean) Briggs, Jennifer (Josh) Vinnedge, James Holbert, Jenessa (Matt) Anderson, Eric (Crystal) Huenefeld, Emily (Eric) Olp, Heather Plum, Brooke (Keegan Vanderhyden) Plum and Maggie Plum and 12 great-grandchildren, his nephews Kirk and Keith Moll and niece Debbie (Bill) Oppold. Great nephews Kyle and Kevin Oppold and great niece Rachel (Ryan) Williams. He was preceded in death by his wife Carol Holbert, his parents James and Louella Holbert and brother-in-law Richard T. Moll. Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday March 5, 2022 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Pastor Eddie Eddy will officiate. Visitation Friday March 4, 2022, 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. also at Burke Tubbs. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
