Rebecca Bell (Dickens) Thomas graced this world with her presence on March 29, 1953, born to the late William N. Dickens and the vibrant Ms. Carrie (Davis) Herron in Freeport, Illinois.
Her journey in education began in Freeport, Illinois, culminating in the proud achievement of her GED in 1988. Embarking on her professional path, Rebecca dedicated her early years to compassionate service as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Stephenson Nursing Home. Later, she seamlessly juggled two jobs, one as a dedicated dietary aide and custodial maintenance worker at Taylor Park and the other as a valued employee at Vitner’s.
Rebecca was a beacon of kindness and love, with an unwavering compassion for children. Her mantra, "no kid left behind," defined her commitment to nurturing and caring for the younger generation.
On Friday, March 1, 2024, Mrs. Thomas peacefully departed from this life at her home after a brief and unexpected illness. Although her absence is deeply felt, her legacy lives on in the cherished memories of those fortunate enough to have known her.
Left to carry forward her love are her five sons: Alexander Dickens, Willie James Brown, Bradley O. Dickens, Jason T. Brown, and Cyril P. (Sreana) Thomas. Additionally, her two daughters, Audrey C. Dickens and Catherine L. Thomas, join the family in celebrating Rebecca's life. A remarkable 37 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, with three more great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild on the way, reflect the breadth of her familial love.
Rebecca's memory is further preserved by her brothers: Joseph (Yvonne) Dickens, Clarence Dickens, Waddel (Vellita) Dickens, and Perry Herron. Her sisters, Joanne (George) Benson and Denise (Quinnon) Garner, also join in the collective remembrance. Numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives, along with a special group of young men and women who affectionately considered her a mother, add to the mosaic of those touched by her grace.
Honorary mentions go to Daine Herron, William and Wilbur Dickens, and Johnny Dickens, individuals whose impact on her life was particularly meaningful.
Rebecca Bell (Dickens) Thomas is reunited in the beyond with her parents, brother William Jimmy Dickens, sister Mary Kaye Dickens, son Andre Dickens, grandson Tremon Thompson, and her beloved aunt Hattie C. (TT) Dickens. As we celebrate her life, let us remember the warmth, love, and indomitable spirit she shared with us all.
