Raymond "Ray" Allen Moss

Raymond "Ray" Allen Moss, 85, of Freeport passed away on, Friday, February 24, 2023 at his home surrounded by loved ones. Ray was born on December 21, 1937 in Streator, IL the son of Raymond H. and Agnes M. (Rabbitt) Moss. He married Janice "Jan" Payne on November 21, 1964 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Streator, IL. Ray served in the United States Airforce. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier while living in Streator and then became a Illinois State Trooper for District 16 and retired after 26 years of service. After retirement, he worked for Stephenson County as a Deputy Sheriff at the courthouse. Ray was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and past member of the Knights of Columbus. Ray would volunteer at Aquin High School, where all 6 kids attended, whether taking tickets at games or dressing up as an Andrew Sister for FACES. He loved to support charitable organizations- including St Jude Childrens Research Hospital, veterans and Indian Reservations, this was all part of his giving spirit. Ray and Jan enjoyed traveling, and also going to see their kids and grandkids once they retired as well as attending chapel and volunteering at church. Ray is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jan Moss of Freeport; six children, Beth (John) Martin of Freeport, Dave (Barbara) Moss of Apple Valley, MN, Mike (Marissa) Moss of Bloomington, Julie Moss of Browntown, WI, Steve (Christie) Moss of Rock City and Amy (Shanan Schlichenmayer) Moss of Queen Creek, AZ; five grandchildren, Kayla, Dylan, Malia, Marin and Caleb Moss. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am on Friday, March 3, 2023 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father Peter Snieg, officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers include: Dave Moss, Mike Moss, Steve Moss, John Martin, Shanan Schlichenmayer, Caleb and Dylan Moss. Visitation will be from 5:00pm-8:00pm on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, with a Rosary Service starting at 4:30pm. In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church or Aquin High School.
