Phyllis H. Mergen

Phyllis H. Mergen, 95, of Freeport, died Thursday April 17, 2014 at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport. She was born on April 24, 1918 if Freeport, IL, the daughter of Fred and Rose (Young) Kunkle. She married Eugene "Whitey" Mergen on November 6, 1954 in Freeport, IL. Phyllis worked as a checker at A.P. Grocery Store. She was a member of the Freeport Moose Auxiliary and the Freeport eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling, music, dancing, and being around people. Phyllis is survived by her husband Eugene "Whitey" Mergen of Freeport, IL; two sons William Loring and Richard (Sarah) Loring both of Freeport; two daughters JoAnne Chambers and Judith (Richard Holbert) Cassidy both of Freeport, IL; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; two sons Robert and Raymond; two brothers; two sisters; one grandson Jeff; and two son-in-laws. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday April 21, 2014 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, with Rev. Tom McClellan officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in her memory.
