Philip W. Scanlon, 78, of Freeport died Friday at F.H.N. Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born May 13, 1932 in Freeport, the son of Philip and Ruby (Toelle) Scanlon. On October 1, 1955, Phil married Frances M. Dennis in Belton, Mo. She died April 4, 2009. Mr. Scanlon was a 1950 graduate of Freeport High School. He served in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956. Phil was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service retiring in 1988. Phil was a member of Eagles club #679, the V.F.W. and the former Germania Club. He enjoyed his pets , especially his dog, Maggie. Surviving are his son, Brian (Teri) Scanlon of Ottawa: three daughters, Debra (Donald) Wierzycki of Forreston, Teresa (Mike) Truckenmiller and Patricia (John Slechta) Scanlon '"Watson of Freeport. One brother , James Scanlon of Dubuque, Iowa. Twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Funeral service for Mr. Scanlon will be Wednesday, 2:00 P.M. in Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport. Rev. Willis R. Schwichtenberg will officiate. Visitation will be from 12:00 P.M. until time of service at Burke-Tubbs. Entombment will be in Chapel Hill memorial Gardens. A memorial has been established for Friends Forever Humane Society.
