Orvin "Orv" E. Schwartz, 92, loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died, Thursday March 16, 2023, at Ascension Living St. Joseph Village in Freeport, IL.
Born on his family farm on September 5, 1930 in Darlington, WI, he was a son of Lewis and Victoria (Blackbourn) Schwartz.
Orvin married Mary Kehl, April 19, 1948 in Stockton, IL. They purchased a farmette south of Freeport returning to their roots of being on a farm. He was a farmer and enjoyed raising cows, horses and dogs. Orvin also worked as a truck driver for Freeport Fast Freight and then Arkansas Best Freight retiring after 30 plus years of service. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church since 1952. He was a past member of the Germania Club. He loved traveling, especially the week long vacations with his family. He was an avid Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Green Bay Packer Fan.
Orvin is survived by his wife of 74 years, Mary Schwartz of Freeport, IL; children, Vicky Schwartz of Freeport, IL, Margaret "Peggy" Dixon of Cedarville, IL, Tim Schwartz of Algonquin, IL, Pat (Dawn) Schwartz of Naples, FL, and Kelley Cassels of Whigham, GA; brother, Don Schwartz of Galena, IL; grandchildren, Richard (Sara) Dixon , Jeremy (Karla) Dixon, Alex (Charlotte) Schwartz, Nathan Schwartz, Kaitlin (Chris) Johnson, Sam Cassels, and Lauren Cassels; and four great-grandchildren, Jeremia Dixon, Mackynzie Dixon, Parker Dixon and Carson Dixon; along with many nieces and nephews who meant so much to him.
Orvin was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Victoria Schwartz; son-in-law, Daniel Dixon; and siblings, Mary Gobel, Wilma, Judy, Robert, Francis, and Paul Schwartz.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Freeport with Father Peter Snieg, officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00pm-6:30pm on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home with rosary service starting at 4:00pm; also visitation will be 9:30am-10:30am prior to the funeral mass at church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Freeport.
Memorials may be directed to Aquin High School in Freeport.
