Ora "Genny" Johnson

November 16, 1919 — December 12, 2012

Ora G. 'Genny' Johnson, 93, of Freeport died peacefully at her home Wednesday. She was born November 16, 1919 in Rockwood, Tennessee, the daughter of Harry H. and Louise (Zumstein) Miles. Genny graduated from Oakdale High School in 1934 and moved to Freeport, Illinois. She married Charles 'Chuck' Johnson on October 8, 1945. He died December 28, 2010. Mrs. Johnson was employed by Kraft Foods, the medical office of Dr. Rockey and Micro Switch, a division of Honeywell. She was a member of First Presbyterian-United Presbyterian Church for more than sixty years. In retirement she volunteered at F.A.C.C. and Freeport Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed homemaking, gardening, knitting, and quilting, playing bridge and spending time with her family. Genny was a very kind, loving and hard working person. We will miss her dearly, but we are comforted that, after a long struggle with Alzheimer'™s Disease she is now at peace. Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons; Roger (Cathy) Johnson and Stephan (Emma) Johnson , Three grandsons; Nathaniel, Seth and Joshua Johnson, her sister; Edith Bowers, her sister in law; Jessie (Bo) Miles; special nieces; Sandy (Bill) Kelly and Pam (Rick) Taylor and several other nieces, nephews and their children. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her infant son David, four brothers; Bill, Frank, Harry and Paul and three sisters; Bella, Roberta and Veda. The family wishes to thank the LSSI In-touch program, the Freeport Senior Center, Comfort Keepers and Hospice for their support and assistance. A special thank-you to our caregiver Jessica, who provided many hours of tender, loving respite care. We are very grateful, too, for the kindness of neighbors who helped Chuck and Genny over the years, especially the Castles, the Andersons and the Bournes. A funeral sevice will be held at United Presbyterian Church in Freeport at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 19. Rev. Kathleen Luke, Pastor will officiate. There will be a visitation 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in her memory. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
