Norma Jean Davis

Norma Jean Davis, 99, of Freeport, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, April 29, 2024, at Winn-Prairie, surrounded by her loving family. Norma Jean was born January 2, 1925, in Freeport, the daughter of Fred and Estelle (Blackman) Voss. Norma Jean married James A. Davis on July 28, 1973. Mr. Davis passed away March 14, 1994. Norma Jean graduated from Freeport High School in 1943, received a degree in home economics from Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, lowa) in 1947, then continued her graduate work at the University of lowa, receiving her Master of Science degree in nutrition. Norma Jean worked as the Head Dietician at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford from 1949-65, then served as the Assistant to the Director of Food Services for the Rockford School District from 1965-68. She served as Director of Food Services for the Rockford School District for 27 years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ.

Surviving are her granddaughter, Suzanne (Tim) Meyerhofer of Freeport; two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Kaitlyn Meyerhofer; step-son Doug Davis of Freeport; step-daughter Sally Smull of Picayune, Mississippi, and nephew, Tad Davis of Loves Park; also surviving are several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Norma Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and best friend, Barbara Guldberg.

Norma Jean valued her faith, family, and friends. She lived out her faith through her Godly example, serving her church through her involvement on the consistory board and improving the lives of people around her through her work with Neighborhood Housing. She enjoyed taking many trips with her friends and family. But most of all, she cherished time spent with her family and great-grandchildren, and especially looked forward to sharing the Christmas season with them.

Funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Visitation at 9:00 A.M. until the time of service. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
