Michael E. O'Brien

Michael E. O' Brien, 61, of Freeport, IL passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 15, 2022 at Azura Memory Care, Monroe, WI after a long, hard-fought battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mike was born on November 5, 1960 in Mendota, IL to John and Joan (O'Malley) O'Brien. He married Angela Schanfeldt on November 9, 1991 in Freeport, IL. Survivors include his wife Angie of Freeport, IL; daughter Megan of Chicago, IL; son Michael J. of Rockford, IL; three brothers John (Renee) O'Brien, Patrick (Susan) O'Brien, Larry (Renae) O'Brien, one sister Jean O'Brien, brother-in-law Randy (Kathy) Fox, 15 incredible nieces and nephews, 13 extra special great nieces and nephews, and in-laws Mark and Judy Schanfeldt. He treasured his time spent with his kids and rarely missed an event or a game. Mike always jumped at the chance to spend time with his brothers at Iowa or Notre Dame football games. Mike was a gentle, quiet soul who was most happy being around those he loved. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister Rose O'Brien. Mike was a 1978 graduate of Mendota High School and a 1984 graduate of Western Illinois University. He spent the majority of his career in the banking industry working in Rockford, Dekalb, and Freeport. He enjoyed volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and the Freeport Recycle Store. He loved working with great friends to better our community. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday May 19, 2022, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Fr. Peter Snieg will officiate. Visitation 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family is extremely grateful for the kind, caring staff at Azura Memory Care and Agrace Hospice who were unwavering in their care and support. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Mike's memory.
