Melvin L. O’Neal Obituary

Melvin L. O’Neal, a resident of Freeport, IL passed away on September 11, 2024. He was born on September 2, 1946 in Lexington, Mississippi to the union of Albert O’Neal and Marzilla (Hollins) O’Neal.

After Melvin graduated from Freeport High School in Freeport, IL, Class of 1965, he continued his educational studies at Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman University), Kirksville, Missouri where he obtained his B.A. degree in the field of Latin American History. Melvin also completed graduate studies at Northern Illinois University where he obtained his MA degree in the field of U.S. History.

After completing his graduate studies, Melvin returned to Freeport to teach Social Studies at School District 145, Carl Sandburg Middle School 1969-1982; Freeport High School 1982-1983; Freeport Junior High School 1983-1993. He also was a Master Instructor (3rd Degree), for 32 years, at Highland Community College, and taught students the art of Tae Kwon-do: Karate, self-defense, physical fitness, tournament fighting, and mental discipline. He did not just teach a subject he taught his students about life. His unwavering dedication and love for teaching left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know him. Melvin also received the Excellence in Teaching Award in 1990, and the Who’s Who in Teaching recognition in 1992.

Melvin also was a member of National Council for The Social Studies; Freeport Education Association (president); Illinois Education Association (State Convention delegate); and National Education Association (National Convention delegate).

Melvin was predeceased by his parents. He leaves to cherish his memory, his sisters, Helen O’Neal, Maggie O’Neal, Claudien Payne, Mary Brabson, Edith Foster, Debra Benton; his brothers, Albert A. O’Neal, and Timothy O’Neal; numerous relatives, friends, and long-time friend Rick Rowe.

There will be no service at this time. A memorial service will be planned for a later date.
