Maureen “Reenie” (McGinnis) Kornfeind, 62, of Freeport, went home to Our Lord on February 18, 2025, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born on October 21, 1962 to Lawrence and Charlotte (Rademaker) McGinnis, the youngest of five children.
She attended Freeport Catholic Schools and graduated from Highland Community College. She worked for several years as a legal secretary and for the Stephenson County State’s Attorney Office.
Reenie was an excellent athlete, enjoying basketball and tennis. She was a choir member at both St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Mary Catholic Churches in Freeport, where she met her husband, Michael Kornfeind. They were married on June 23, 1990. They completed their family with the birth of their son Christopher in 1994 and daughter Erin in 1999, as well as adding numerous rescued cats along the way. Reenie was a nurturing mother and loved spending time in the company of her family. She was very creative and designed beautiful wreaths, crafts, and hand painted signs which she gave to family and friends. Other favorite activities included making Christmas cookies, attending Chris and Erin’s baseball games and musical events, and listening to classic rock music with her son and daughter. She especially enjoyed a nice cup of coffee with her cat Lil Bill on her lap.
She is survived by her son Christopher (Emily) and daughter Erin of Freeport, as well as by her sisters Kathy (Duane) Sies of Freeport, Mary (Dan) Swearengen of Branson, Missouri, brother Tim (Ellen) McGinnis of Freeport, and sister-in-law Patti McGinnis of Tunnell Hill, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband Michael, her brother Michael McGinnis, and her parents Lawrence and Charlotte McGinnis.
