Matthew Williams

Matthew Williams, 72, of Freeport, died in his home Friday April 1, 2011 after an eleven year battle with cancer. Matthew was born March 10, 1939 in Ary, Kentucky, the son of Harlan and Hazel( Godsey) Williams. Matthew had a 20 year career with the Air Force. He had a year and a half tour in Okinawa, transferring to Truax Field, Wisconsin, where he met and married his first wife, Joanne Carlson. They married June 20, 1961. She died October 15, 1981. Mr. Williams went back to Okinawa for a 2nd one and half year tour, returning to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Next Matthew did a tour for one year in Thialand. He went back to the states for a four year tour at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, from there he went to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, finishing out his military career. He moved his family to Freeport in September 1977, . He and his family have made Illinois their home ever since. Matt married Patricia Gabriel on January 11, 1983. She died February 17, 2011 He was a custodian at Freeport Jr. High School for 19 years, retiring in June 1999. Matt and Patty enjoyed camping and motorcycle riding for years. In recent years after giving up his motorcycle, mopeds, and campground, Matt and Patty enjoyed the open Air riding in his little yellow 1983 Mustang Ragtop. Survivors include two sons, Mark Williams of Phoenix, AZ and Jason (Heather) Williams of Rockford; two sisters Wanda Lee Whitaker and Bobbi Jean Owens. Three grandson; Aaron, Tyler and Alexander. One Great-grandson, Bryce. He was preceded in death by two wives, Joanne Marie Carlson and Patricia Gabriel, parents, Harland and Hazel, and his brother H.C. Funeral service will be Saturday, 11:00 P.M. at Jenson Cemetery, Edgerton, Wisconsin. Visitation will be Friday 4-7 p.m. at Burke-Tubbs Freeport. A memorial has been established in his name.
