Malcolm L. Coomber

Malcolm LaVerne Coomber was born on March 1, 1924, and died on November 5, 2015. He was a lifetime resident of Freeport, Illinois. He was the son of Nellie Neiman Coomber and Lowell B. Coomber. Malcolm graduated from Freeport High School in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he reached the rank of Private First Class and received the Good Conduct Medal. He married his beloved Lucile Elsie Gassmann on June 26, 1946. Malcolm farmed in Lancaster Township after employment at the Henney Motor Company. He was a long-time member of Second Presbyterian Church and served many years as an elder. He also served on the Dakota Public School District school board and was a member of the Gideons International. He enjoyed flying his private airplane, serving as a Lifeline Pilot, reading with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and golfing. Malcolm was preceded in death by his wife, his brother, Elwood Coomber, and his sister, Beatrice Coomber Henk. He is survived by his two daughters: Lorraine Coomber Brewer and her husband, Dennis Brewer, of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and Jeanne Coomber Miller, and her husband, Brad Miller, of Fort Collins, Colorado. Malcolm has 5 grandchildren: Marissa Brewer Henley (husband, C. Noel Henley), Amanda Brewer Johnson (husband, Brian L. Johnson), and Jamison William Brewer (wife, Eva Leventer), Brett Miller, and Jason Miller (wife, Whitney Miller). He also has 7 great-grandchildren: Christopher Noel Henley, Jr., William Breckinridge Henley, Sarah Katherine Henley, Asher Greeley Johnson, Clara Marissa Johnson, Emerson Rae Miller, and Titus Owen Miller. Visitation will be Monday, November 9, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home with a funeral service on Tuesday, November 10, at 1:00 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, Freeport, Illinois.
