Lyle William Dahms of Freeport, Illinois went home to heaven on October 25, 2017. Lyle was born to Kearny and Christie Belle Shippee Dahms on November 28, 1928 in the little town of McConnell, IL. His second mother, after Christie Belle passed at a young age, Ruby Klontz. He has one older brother Edgar married to Coyla. On June 28, 1953 he married his one and only true love, Alice Evalyn Richtemeyer. Together they had John (Kathy Babcock), Marvin (Nadine Pash), Robert (Erin Mellom), Douglas (MaryJo Blair), Christi (Warren Hale) and MaryBeth Coleman. An additional part of his children were Teresa (George) Shashaty, and Jeff (Tana) Hellwig. He had two-sister-in laws, Norma (Leo) Zimmerman, Marion Smith and one brother-in-law Dean (Ruth Albrect) Richtemeyer. He has 28 grandchildren and 6 step-grandchildren. Chad, Jennifer, Jeanette, Philip, Loralei, and Rachel Babcock, Joshua and Brittany Dahms, Matthew, Jessica, Allyson, and Lucas Dahms, Elly, Bryn, Carly Dahms, Cody (deceased) Tyler, Barret Hale, William, Andrew, Elizabeth Coleman, Alyssa and Nicholas Shashaty, Heather, Mason, Whitney, and Lane Hellwig. He also has 11 great grand children with more to follow his legacy. Lyle attended Salem Elementary School and then went on to attend Orangeville High School. While attending school, a tornado destroyed the family home. Lyle had to quit school to help rebuild the family farm. Later in life, Lyle went on to finish his High School education. Lyle owned his own trucking and milk route business at an early age. He had to forgo his milk and trucking operation when he was drafted for the Korean War where he served for two years in the Army. Upon his return, he joined the Kelly Springfield Tire Company where he retired after 30 years of service. Lyle was a devout, faithful and longtime member of the Church of the Brethren. He was a deacon in the church. He served on many church committees throughout his lifetime. Lyle was also a Master Mason and previous member of the Elk's and Moose lodge. He was also a fellow Kiwanian. Throughout Lyle's life, he helped many people along the way. Lyle enjoyed fishing. However, his true passion and talented gift was that of building things. If somebody wanted it, Lyle designed and built it. He built children's furniture, shelves, cupboards, doll bunk beads, vanities, garages, barns and whatever else his children, grandchildren, or friends wanted. Lyle loved being in his workshop. If it was broken, Lyle could fix it. A special thank you goes out to FHN Hospice for their loving care and support. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Funeral services for Lyle will be at Bethany United Church of Christ at 10:30 a.m. on November 1, 2017 Following the funeral, Lyle will be laid to rest with grave side services at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial will be established in Lyle Dahms name for Christian outreach. The family requests that all family and friends attend a luncheon at Bethany United Church following graveside services to celebrate Lyle's life.
