Lucretia "Mae" Smith

February 27, 1934 — December 10, 2018

Lucretia 'Mae' Smith, 84, of Freeport died Monday, December 10, 2018 at Stephenson Nursing Center. She was born February 27, 1934 in Shullsburg, WI the daughter of Thomas and Eileen (Palfrey) Mullen. Lucretia married Alfred J. Smith on July 19, 1952 in Shullsburg. She was employed at House of Fabrics and later at Micro Switch. She was a member at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Mae was a loving wife and Al's best friend for 67 years. She was a wonderful mother of four, grandmother of seven, great-grandmother of 6 and great-great grandmother of one. She grew up on a farm in Shullsburg, WI and met Al on the school bus. Mae was so energetic her family lovingly referred to her as "fireball". Because of her adventurous spirit, she was ready to go anywhere at the drop of a hat. Mae and Al traveled all over the U.S. and several places in Europe. She was Al's fishing buddy and together they spent a lot of time at their place on the Mississippi. She was a voracious reader, genealogist, and volunteer. She was interested in sewing and needlepoint and active in many clubs. Mae will be deeply missed by all of us. Surviving are her husband Al; son Matthew (Ann) Smith of Mt. Horeb, WI; three daughters Kelly (Dean Davis) Smith of Freeport, Kerrin Burns of Freeport, and Sheila Smith of Oshkosh, WI; one brother Gerald (Barb) Mullen of Lake Geneva, WI; one sister Lola Hannah of Galena, IL; special friend Doris Cline; seven grandchildren Joshua Love, Bryon Burns, Ryan Smith, Jared Smith, Amy Kiddy, Christopher Kiddy and Michael Cline; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents. Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday December 14, 2018 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with a visitation from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. A visitation will also be held from 4:00 P.M.- 6:00 P.M. Thursday December 13, 2018 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
