Leona Sofran

Leona Sofran, 98, of Freeport, died Friday December 12, 2014 at Stephenson Nursing Center in Freeport. She was born January 4, 1916 in Barberton, OH, the daughter of Peter and Melanna (Miknuk) Zahorjanski. She married George Sofran, Jr. May 19, 1934; he died April 9, 1974. Leona lived in Kucura Yugoslavia for six years as a child and was fluent in three languages. She began working at Micro Switch 1949 retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Stephenson County Home Extension. She enjoyed gardening, yard work, and following the Chicago Bears. Leona is survived by her son Jerold (Adrien) Sofran, Sr. of Dunedin, FL; her daughter Patricia (Dale) Schutte of Darlington, SC; and her grandchildren Joan (Greg) Rada, John (Peggy) Rundall, Jerold Sofran, Jr. Deanna (Dennis) Pennick, Timothy Sofran, Brett Monigold, Jill (Robert) Mellnick, Jessica Ekdahl, and Dustin Schutte. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons; and two brothers. A memorial service will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday December 16, 2014 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, with Rev. Keith Johnson officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. Burial of cremains will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery in Freeport.
