LaVerne Mittelsteadt

LaVerne Mittelsteadt, 89, of Freeport, IL, passed away Thursday March 20, 2025 at Manor Court with his family by his side. He was born August 5, 1935 in Shullsburg, WI the son of Willam and Florence (Bird) Mittelsteadt. On July 20, 1957 he married Betty Wickland in Nora, IL. LaVerne worked in maintenance, beginning his career at Structo in Freeport for a few years and then spent the majority of his work career at Newell, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Freeport. LaVerne was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed traveling and fishing. Family was most important to LaVerne, he coached his kids in Little League and later in life found great joy in attending any event of his grandchildren’s.

He is survived by his wife Betty of Freeport; five children Kimberly (Ted) Davis of Broadhead, WI, Kelly (Mark) Lawler of Pearl City, IL, Kirk (Suzie) Mittelsteadt of rural Freeport, IL, Kevin (Audrey) Mittelsteadt of Freeport, IL, and Kristi (Todd) Fransen of Lake Carrol, IL; two brothers Albert (Janet) Mittelsteadt of Warren, IL and Robert Mittelsteadt of Loves Park, IL; brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Carol Meyers of Cedarville, IL; nine grandchildren Jeremy, Kari (Nick), Kayci (Patrick), Trenton (Kirsten), Megan (Steffen), Nicole (Nick), Halle (Francesco), Kylie (Brenden), and Maura; and thirteen great-grandchildren Jaden (Addie), Sydney, Jordan, Jerzie, Kennedi, Rowen, Brooks, Emersyn, Braelyn, Ellyana, Heath, Peyton, and Brielle.

Preceding LaVerne in death are his parents, father and mother in law Alva and Ione Wickland of Cedarville, IL, 8 brothers (and sisters in law) and sisters (and brothers in law), and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday March 28, 2025 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Rev. Willis Schwichtenberg will officiate. A visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. There will also be a visitation Thursday March 27, 2025 from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial has been established in LaVerne’s memory.
