Laverne A. Stubbe

LaVerne Alvin Stubbe, 93, passed from his earthly home to his glorious one in heaven on Friday, December 22, 2017. LaVerne was born May 6, 1924 at Browntown, Wisconsin, the son of Clarence L. and Alvina (Schmerse) Stubbe. On July 29, 1944 LaVerne married Betty Jane Wittbecker in Lena, Illinois by Pastor L. H. Beto. His wonderful, loving wife preceded him in death on November 5, 2005 in her journey home to her heavenly Father, where they will be forever reunited, enjoying their everlasting... lives together. LaVerne and his wife Betty of 61 years farmed most of their lifetime in the Dakota area, where LaVerne also trucked for many markets and sale barns in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa, including Equity Market when it opened. He also worked at the Harry Schrader Livestock Marketing Center in Dakota for many of those years. His motto was "You Call We Haul". LaVerne also worked for Louis Miller Implement Dealership until in the mid 50's when the business was sold. LaVerne accepted the Lord at an early age at the E.U.B. Church in Freeport, Illinois, where Rev. H. I. Newell was pastor. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Freeport where he served on the trustee's board and was an usher for many years. He now attends and is a member of Zion Church in Freeport, Illinois. He also was a former member of the Gideon's and The Dakota Lions Club. Many of his accomplishments and memberships include: Member of the Farm Bureau, Member of FUMMC Milk Marketing which later became Family Dairies USA. He was chairman for 10 years of the Illinois Local Marketing Association and served 10 years on Illinois Milk Production board. He was with the Stephenson County Fair Association for many years serving on several different committees. He served as chairman on several building projects and was Superintendent of the Pony Show and for 28 years he served as Superintendent of the Open Horse Show. He also was a 4-H leader where he was in charge of a group of Illinois 4-Hers that went to Washington for conferences, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends, always enjoying life to it's fullest. He always had some funny joke or story to tell. He cherished his church family and many friends that became very dear to him. They always looked out for him, which he appreciated immensely. His hobbies included tractor pulling, showing horses and ponies, registered or open at various fairs. He loved watching his sons follow in his footsteps of tractor pulling and also showing of different livestock at various shows and fairs. His daughter also did livestock and pony showing. He also was leader of many 4-Hers that helped at the country shows that the Masonic Temple hosted. Kids from all over the Stephenson County were asked to participate at the shows as ushers. Survivors include three sons, Larry (Maryann) Stubbe, and William (Nancy) Stubbe, both of Dakota, Terry Stubbe and one daughter Patricia (Gaylon) Wilson of Freeport. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren: Tad (Michelle) Stubbe, Tracy, (Kurt) Hudrlik, Jeffrey Stubbe, Michael (Megan) Stubbe, Gregory (Amanda) Stubbe, Randall (Angela) Stubbe, Kimberlee (Kerry) Thomas, Debra McLain, and Timothy Wilson. 2 step grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by 1 sister, Clarice (LaVern) Koester. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 1 brother, Lyle and brother-in-law. LaVerne's family would like to add a very SPECIAL thank you to his caregivers Becky (Johnson)Tunstall, Diane Hughes, Gwen Boddie and FHN Hospice. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday December 27, 2017 at Zion Church. Pastor John Brandner and Pastor Steve Rios will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday December 26, 2017 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. There will also be a visitation Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at Zion Church.
