Kathleen Annette Atherton

Kathleen (Kathy) Annette Atherton, 79, of Shannon, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at her home.

She was born February 21, 1945, in Freeport, Illinois, and she was a graduate of Freeport High School. She married Ellis Atherton on September 21, 1963, in Freeport. Kathy worked as a bank teller at First State Bank of Shannon, as a clerk with the Stephenson County Treasurer’s Office and for Newell Corporate in credit collections before retiring.

Kathy enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. She enjoyed reading and was an avid Chicago Bears fan. She was extremely proud of her grandchildren and simply adored her great-grandchildren.

Surviving her are her husband of 60 years, Ellis Atherton, her two sons: Bob (Becky) Atherton of Osage Beach, MO and Jeff Atherton of Cedar Rapids, IA; a brother Don (Karen) Munz of Arvada, CO; three grandchildren: Brady (Sierra) Atherton, Kari (Cody) Suhr and Aubrey Atherton; three great-grandchildren: Embrie, Joey and Bodhi; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Jeanette Munz and sister Sandra Mellen.

Memorial services are being held at 3:00pm Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, Illinois, with Pastor Tim Lehman officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00pm until the time of service. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Kathy’s memory for Shannon Baptist Church camp scholarship fund.
