Karl Rupert Vittinghoff, 69, of Freeport and former Rockford resident slipped the surly bonds of earth unexpectedly Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012 at his home. He was born December 14, 1942 in Toledo, Ohio the son of Rupert and Jean (Rinehart) Vittinghoff. Karl married Marian '˜Betsy' Staack on May 25, 1968 in Moline, Illinois. Mr. Vittinghoff is survived by his wife; Marian '˜Betsy' Vittinghoff, his son; Hans Rupert Vittinghoff, daughter in law; Amy Beth Young and grandchildren; Zizi Asta von Vittinghoff and Mars Sigi von Vittinghoff of Rockford. His brother; Eric Vittinghoff of San Francisco, Ca. Karl was preceded in death by his parents, two sister'™s in law; Sarah (Staack) Roll and Susan (Staack) Gill. A lifetime aviator, Karl taught countless people to fly, including his wife Betsy and son Hans. Known intimately by few, Karl'™s modesty never kept him from showing kindness to any stranger; especially those less fortunate. He did not suffer fools or phonies well, but loved and showered attention upon any child, tirelessly. Karl truly believed the world could become a better place one child at a time.
