John "Mack" Howington

John "Mack" Howington, 84, of Freeport died Tuesday at Astra Care Center, Rockford. John was born December 15, 1929 in Freeport, Illinois', the son of Robert "Doc" and Hettye (Oliphant) Howington. John was a graduate of Freeport High School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with an Art History degree. John was a United States Air Force veteran, serving from 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict. John was a gentle soul who enjoyed art and music. He has one nephew, Robert "Bobby" Howington III of Chicago, and a niece, Alicia (Marc) Ziegler of Chicago.He also has four great-nieces; Annabel and Ainsley Howington ,and Alexandra and Elizabeth Ziegler. Also surviving are his great friends, Rita Ayre, Wayne Crowell and Butch Broughton. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert, Jr. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, February, 5 at 11:00 A.M. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Freeport. A memorial has been established in his name.
