In the early morning hours of hours of October 21, 2017, my Lord called home John L. Brumfield Jr. He was born December 11, 1927 in Canton, Mississippi to the late John L. Brumfield Sr. and Rosa Lee Hill-Brumfield. John grew up in Freeport and graduated from Freeport High School. After marrying the love of his life they settled in Chicago and shortly after they purchased a home in Gary, Indiana. They stayed in that home for 61 years. John has earned a degree in Labor Education from Roosevelt University, Chicago. John was also a World War II veteran and received a decoration medal for Japanese Occupation. Among many of his achievements he owned and operated his own business for more than 10 years in Gary. He was a lifetime member of AMVETS Post #6 Gary, Indiana. John has mentored many young men and women in Gary and around the country. John L. also worked as a milkman for more than 20 years and was the first African-American milkman for Joe Louis Milk Company in Gary. John loved fishing, hunting, and baseball. He was a long time member of St. Phillip Lutheran Church in Gary and had turned his life over to the Lord and that was most important to him. John L. leaves to cherish his memories his wife and best friend of 68 years Lucean of Freeport; three sons, Dennis (Patricia) Brumfield of Freeport, Ralland (Annett) Brumfield of Racine, Wisconsin, Gregory 'TC" of Freeport; two sisters, Mamie(John) Shipp of Freeport and Ida Bland of Rock Island, IL.; two brothers, Willie Brumfield of St. Louis and Arthur Brumfield of Friendswood, Texas; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Lloyd James; grandsons, Jonathan and Jamal Brumfield. Special thanks to Pastor Everlena Thurmond, Sister Eva Craig, FHN Hospice as well as Stephenson Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday October 28, 2017 at Faith Center, Freeport, IL. Visitation will be Saturday 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at Faith Center.
