FREEPORT - John (Jack) Bernard Egan 79, of Freeport died Monday, November 2, 2015 in Rockford after a short illness. Born on January 24, 1936 in Fond du Lac, WI. The son of Virginia and Bernard Egan of Manitowoc, WI. Jack married Arlene (Lyons) on July 25th, 1959 in Dunnington, Indiana. The Egans settled in Freeport, IL in 1962. They have been members of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Freeport and St. Timothy's in the Villages, Florida. Jack was a two time Wisconsin High School State Tennis champion earning a tennis scholarship to Northwestern University. In addition to playing varsity singles for the Wildcats, Jack was also an offensive guard for the football team. Jack earned a degree in education from Northwestern and spent a short time as a professional tennis player before being drafted into the Army. Jack was stationed in San Antonio, Texas during the Korean War. Jack worked as a guidance counselor and coach for Freeport School District #145 for more than 30 years. He continued his education at Northern Illinois University earning a Masters in Education. He also kept playing tennis throughout his adult years, winning numerous city tournament titles and even won the State of Florida Senior Doubles Title at age 65. Jack is survived by his children: Colleen Nicolosi of Estero FL, Terry (Jennifer) Egan of Rockford, and Patrick (Sharon) Egan of Madison, WI. Grandchildren include Matthew (Jessica) Nicolosi, Michael Nicolosi, Nathan Egan, Taylor Egan, Sara Hallstein, Shannon Hallstein, Riley Egan, and Delaney Egan. Jack is preceded by his parents Bernard & Virginia, his Wife Arlene, and his brother David. A visitation has been set for Saturday, November 7, 2015 from 9am to 10:30am at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 1400 Kiwanis Dr. Freeport, IL. Services will take place at 10:30am with internment to follow at Calvary Cemetery, 1700 W. Stephenson Rd. in Freeport. The family has requested that friends join them for a luncheon at the church following the internment.
