John J. Heitz

John J. Heitz, 91, of Freeport, died Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Stephenson Nursing Center in Freeport. John was born on March 17, 1924, in Stephenson County, Illinois, the son of John and Effie (Dietmeier) Heitz. John worked for Sierra Pacific Power Company for 34 years. He served in World War II from 1942-1945 for the United States Air Corp in the 57th Fighter Squadron- 12th Air Force. John was a member of the Eagles Club, Elk's Lodge, VFW, and Freeport AMVETS. Surviving are two daughters, Suzanne Balbac of Freeport and Jonni Jo Meissner of Reno, Nevada; sister, Nancy DeMichele of Freeport; three grandchildren, Emily (Brian) Statdfield of McConnell, Morgan Jo Richard of Nevada, and Jonathan Meissner of Nevada; three great-grandchildren, Madelyn Statdfield, Sophia Statdfield, and William Statdfield. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Walter Goodman, Gale Heitz, Wayne Heitz, and Richard Heitz; and seven sisters, Leila Gift, Theo Arn, Verla Heitz, Jewel Werthwein, Violet Heitz, Carolyn Behmer, and Josephine Mitchell. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Friday April 24, 2015 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Rev. Diane Jochum will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at Burke Tubbs on Friday. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in John's memory.
