John D. Woodward

John D. Woodward, 91, of Freeport, IL passed away Thursday October 10, 2024 at Manor Court in Freeport. He was born June 11, 1933 in Freeport, the son of George W. and Johanna (Schmidt) Woodward. On July 19, 1958 he married Elizabeth Wahlstrom at Grace Episcopal Church in Freeport. John worked for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad/Amtrak for 29 years. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Freeport, Eagles Club #679, Freeport Elks Club, and he was a 32nd Degree Mason. John enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting, darts, going out to eat, and traveling to Orange Beach, AL in the winters. He was known for making his homemade pickles and sauerkraut and loved taking it to his friends in Alabama. John had a love for music and his family will remember him playing his upright bass and incorporating a train whistle into his songs.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of Freeport; his daughter and son, Lori (Dale Folgate) Streeb of Freeport, and Michael (Cathryn Bousselot) of Savanna, IL; niece Ann Clark of Boise, ID; and granddaughter Sara (Bobby) Tiltges of Bolingbrook, IL.

Preceding John in death are his parents, sister-in-law Phyllis (Joe) Barroetabena, and niece Ellen Johns.

Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday October 18, 2024 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service. Burial of cremated remains will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial has been established in John’s memory.
