John D. Aaby, 77, of Freeport, died Saturday, May 24, 2014. He was born June 19, 1936 in Decorah, Iowa to Bertha and Melvin Aaby. He served in the Army from 1954 - 1956 in the U.S. and Germany. He attended Iowa State University for two years and received a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Chicago Technical College in 1960. On January 12, 1963 he married Sharon Kunkle in Freeport. He worked as a civil engineer for the State of Illinois Department of Transportation, American Engineering Co., and as City Engineer for the City of Freeport from which he retired in 1994. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Elks Club, VFW and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, boating, and wintering in Okeechobee, Florida. He is survived by his wife; son Greg (Patti) Aaby; daughter Barb (Joe) Stricker; grandchildren Ben and Kari Aaby and Zachary Stricker, all of Freeport; sister Joanne Varner of Naples, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother James Aaby; and sister Donna Dahlen. Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 30 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 31 at 1:30 p.m. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
