Jerry Richard Downing

Jerry R. Downing, 77, of Dakota, died, Thursday, July 25, 2013 at home. Jerry was born on April 8, 1936, in Freeport, the son of Lyle D. and Elsie (Ottenhausen) Downing. Jerry served for the U.S. Navy from 1954-1958. On September 5, 1959, he married Charlotte 'Char' Raetz in Davis, Illinois. Mrs. Downing died on March 8, 2007. Jerry first owned and operated Downing'™s West End Garage in Freeport, he then co-owned Downing & Otte from 1982-2004. He was a member of the Freeport Eagles Club and a former member of the Germania. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, going to the Casino, and following the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Vikings. Surviving are his son, Jeffrey (Kathy) Downing of Dakota; daughter, Lorrie Bingner of Freeport; special friend, Joanne Fuller of Freeport; three brothers, Mike (Susan) Downing of Encinitas, CA, Jimmy (Andrea) Baker of Saugus, CA, and George Baker of Freeport; sister, Sue Ellen Bushelle of Rockford; four grandchildren, Schyler Bingner, Kalina Bingner, John (Val) Hanson and Heather (Mitch) Robieson. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister, Jeannine Sanman. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Pastor Dennis Jarrard will officiate. Visitation will be Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. also at Burke Tubbs. Following funeral services cremation rites will be accorded. Family burial will be at a later date at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his memory. Please sign the guestbook at www.burketubbs.com.
