Jerome E. Taylor, son of Robert O. and Theresa R. (Herlitzka) Taylor, born Jan. 21, 1929 in Davenport, IA died on August 21, 2012 surrounded by his family at the Provena Saint Joseph Center. He graduated from St. Ambrose College, Davenport, after studying two years at Notre Dame in the Holy Cross Seminary. He and Mary Eckwert were married June 27, 1953 in Davenport, IA. He retired in Dec. 1986 after 27 years from Micro Switch, a Division of Honeywell. He was a supervisor in the Accounting Department. He was a member and past president of Freeport Noon Kiwanis Club and most recently a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He was also a STAR group member and belonged to the Elks Club. He volunteered in the AARP as a tax preparer for 12 years after his retirement and also served as treasurer of District 145 from his retirement until July of 2012. He was a charter member of the Provena Thursday Euchre Club. He was an inspiration to many in the way he lived with Multiple Sclerosis for the past 48 years. His positive attitude at work, his travels and his passion for his many do-it-yourself projects characterized his spirit. Preceding him in death were two infant sons, Jerome Jr. and Peter, and a sister, Mary Ann. Surviving family members include wife (Mary), daughters Jean (John) Kocka, Nan (Dan) Leider, and son, Matthew (Jennifer) Taylor. There are seven grandchildren, John (Lori) Kocka, Dan (Erica) Kocka, Emily, Adam (Juliana), and Anthony Taylor, Megan (Chris) Perry and Sean Leider. There are two great grandchildren, Alexis and Sydney Kocka, brother, Robert Taylor. The family would like to extend our appreciation for the loving care provided by the staff of Provena St. Joseph Home for the last 10 years. Funeral Mass for Mr. Taylor will be 10:00 A.M. Friday August 24, 2012 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Msgr. P. William McDonnell officiating. Visitation will be Thursday August 23, from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, with a Rosary service being held Thursday at 3:30 P.M. There will also be a visitation Friday from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service at St. Thomas. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Davenport, Iowa.
