'" Jean M. Cobb, 84 of Freeport died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Jean was born July 17, 1926, in Evanston, Il., to Phillip Schneider and Lenore Rideout Schneider. On June 4, 1949, she and Smith D. A. 'Skip' Cobb, Jr. were married in Freeport. After graduating from Freeport High School she attended the University of Wisconsin, in Madison. While living in Moline, Jean helped start the first Special Education School for Down'™s Syndrome Children in Illinois. Jean and Skip returned to Freeport in 1984 where they retired, became members of Embury United Methodist Church and Jean assisted as an 'Elf' sending out newsletters and helping with bake sales for the Church. Jean enjoyed playing golf, bridge, cooking and entertaining for family, Skip'™s mom 'Dorothy P. Cobb' , relatives and friends. Some of her fondest memories were vacations at her boy'™s homes and watching her grandchildren grow up. Surviving are her four sons, Smith D. A. 'Skip' (Hope C. Hendrickson) Cobb, III of New Market, MD., N. Tyndale 'Tyn' Cobb II of Arlington, VA., Michael D. (Frances M.) Cobb of Ramsey, MN., and David R. (Nancy E.) Cobb of Longwood, FL.; and eight grandchildren, H. Alexandra Place C. Cobb, Nicholas T. and Jordan A. Cobb, John T, Matt T. and Erin E. Barnes and Tyler D. and Ryan T. Cobb. Preceding her in death were her parents and Smith D. A. 'Skip' Cobb, Jr. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, May 20 at Embury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Singleton officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum for family members. A memorial fund has been established for Embury United Methodist Church and Parkview Home. A reception following the funeral service will be held from 2 '" 4 p.m. at Parkview Home of Freeport in their Party Room.
