James "Jim" Krogull

R. James "Jim" Krogull, 83, of Freeport, IL, passed away on July 3, 2017, surrounded by his family at VA Hospice in Madison, WI, after a brief illness. He was born September 21, 1933, the youngest of five children to Frank and Alice (Frueh) Krogull. Jim grew up in Freeport and graduated from Aquin Catholic High School in 1951. He married Virginia Cannova on December 27, 1953 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Jim served in the Air Force from 1953-1957, during which he was stationed in Seoul, Korea. He joined his father and brothers in the family business, "Krogull's Freeport Cash Meat Market," upon his return from service. Jim joined his brother Don in real estate, opening "Krogull-Mercier Realtors," with Vern Mercier in 1980. He was an active member of the community and a member of Olympic Investors and a charter member of the Lincoln-Douglas Kiwanis Club, where he was honored with the George F. Hixon Fellow award in 1997 and held the office of secretary for 38 years. Jim was a devout Catholic, and a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and loved being outdoors. Jim was a loyal Bears and Cubs fan, having attended Game 3 of the 2016 World Series in Chicago. He saw his last Cubs game, a win, at Wrigley Field on June 11. Jim is survived by his wife, Virginia, and five children: Jeffrey (Ann) of Freeport, Douglas (Debra) of Lena, Kurtis (Stacie) of Overland Park, KS, Bradley (Cheryl) of Burlington, IA, and Beth Ann (Bill) Dorman of Freeport; 14 grandchildren: Shannon (Brian), Brittani (Shawn), Peter, Blake (fianc Stephanie), Michael, Casey, Logan, Matthew, Andrew, Claire, Patrick, Christopher, Aaron and Jonathan; four great-grandchildren: Noah, Corban, Levi and Ella Joy; and sister-in-law Betty (Charlie) Luecke and many nieces and nephews. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, sister Pauline Lasley and brothers Bob, Frank Jr. and Don. The visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, July 11, from 4-7 p.m. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home followed by funeral mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church on Wednesday, July 12, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name for Freeport Lincoln-Douglas Kiwanis Club and St. Joseph's Lakota Indian School for children.
