James E. Baker, 92, of Freeport, died Sunday, July 4, 2011 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Illinois. Mr. Baker was born October 12, 1918 in Freeport, the son of Sherman and Clara (Schlamp Oppold) Baker. Mr. Baker co-owned and operated White Line Cab Company for 30 years which later became Freeport Cab Company. James married Dorothy M. Kant . She died on August 4, 2000. Mr. Baker was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Aquinas Church. Survivors include his son, Jeff (Susan) Baker of Libertyville his sister, Lucille(Larry) Miller of Freeport, two half sisters; Mary Ann (Larry) Shelly and Anna May Diffenbaugh both of Freeport. Also surviving are five grandchildren; Kristen (Trevor) Clarke, Jamie Baker, T.J. Baker, Jeff Modica and Melissa (Jeff) Thomas. He was preceded in death by his wife, his daughter; Sherry Modica who died in 1992, four brothers and two half sisters. Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday July 9, 2011 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home with Msgr. P. William McDonnell officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until the time service Saturday at Burke Tubbs.
