James D. Spangler

James D. Spangler, 92, of Freeport, IL passed away Thursday November 11, 2021 at FHN Memorial Hospital. He was born January 31, 1929 in Freeport, IL to Ezra "Ed" L. and Ida Viola (Oberbillig) Spangler. In 1947 James graduated from Freeport High School. James served in the U.S. Navy enlisting in May of 1948. He served during the Korean Conflict with the Engineman III Class. He was honorably discharged on April 10, 1952. Upon returning home James was employed at Micro Switch as a Quality Assurance Technician. On February 7, 1953 he married Gertrude Virginia Niederberger at St. Victors Church in Monroe, WI. Gertrude passed away September 18, 2002. He retired in 1984 after 32 years of employment. James was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church in Freeport, IL. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis-Golden K, a lifetime member of the Amvets, V.F.W., Germania, Freeport Elks, and Freeport Eagles Club. He is survived by his children James A. (Linda) Spangler, Mary E. (David) Marsh, and Julie A. (Thomas) Fellers; grandchildren Seth Spangler, Evan Spangler, Stephanie Marsh, Michelle Marsh, Heather Marsh, Thomas Fellers, Mary Fellers, Maura Fellers, Christian Ruckert, Shelley Tinsley, Kyle Untersee, and Brooke Kroll; brother-in-law William (Judy) Niederberger; and daughter-in-law Karen (Schroeder) Spangler. Preceding James in death are his parents Ezra and Ida, wife Gertrude, son William Edward, brothers Walter and Harold, and sister-in-law Rose Marie Metz. Private family services will be held. Masks will be required at the services. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in James' memory.
