Irving George Greenfield, 94, of Ridott, Illinois went home to be with the Lord on February 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Irving was born on December 5, 1929, to George and Florence (Ruthe) Greenfield. He was a graduate of Pleasant Prairie Academy in German Valley, Illinois. Irving was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1951 to 1953, and was stationed in Korea during The Korean War. He married Darlene Klenz in Ridott, Illinois on June 21, 1958. Darlene and Irving spent 65 wonderful years together in the same home.
Irving was a member of Park Hills Evangelical Free Church in Freeport, Illinois for over 50 years and served as a Trustee. Alongside his wife, they taught first grade Sunday School for over 25 years.
Irving was employed at Micro Switch in Freeport, Illinois for 40 years where he managed the Precious Metals Department. He was also a member of Micro Switch’s 25 Year Century Club and the Farm Bureau. He also served on the Village Board in Ridott as Village Clerk the same job as his wife held for 30 years. He enjoyed mowing his lawn and working in the flower beds with his wife. Irving and Darlene had a mission of delivering daffodils and tulips to shut-ins. He loved spending time with his family, especially taking bus trips with Darlene and vacationing with Darlene, his son Jeff, his daughter-in-law, Sandy, and his grandson John. A trip to Disney World was a highlight.
Irving enjoyed sports. He enjoyed watching Jeff play baseball and basketball, and he enjoyed watching John play baseball, basketball, and football. He especially loved baseball and visited 15 different Major League ball parks. He also attended numerous games of the St. Louis Cardinals and it was a tradition to go to Opening Day with Jeff and John. He also went to the World Series in 2013 with Jeff and Lambeau Field to see his Packers.
Irving is survived by his loving wife Darlene, son, Jeffrey (Sandy), and his grandson, John, who was his pride and joy. He is also survived by his sister, Dolores Sofran, and brother Dennis Greenfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Roger, Gerald, and David Greenfield.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday March 2, 2024 at Park Hills Evangelical Free Church in Freeport, Illinois with Pastor Larry Elliott officiating. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of service. There will also be a visitation from 4-7 PM Friday March 1, 2024 also at Park Hill Evangelical Free Church. A memorial is being established in Irving’s memory.
