Homer "Jr." Van Matre

Homer "Jr." Van Matre, 91, of Freeport, died Tuesday November 10, 2015 at Stephenson Nursing Center in Freeport. He was born March 16, 1924 in Freeport, IL, the son of Homer and Florence (Daughenbaugh) Van Matre Sr. He married D. Kathryn Stevens December 29, 1945 in Freeport, IL; she died June 7, 2005. Homer drove truck for Freeport Produce for 27 years, and four years for Oak Brand Dairy Co. He also worked for various gas stations in Freeport for several years. He retired from Highland Community College after 18 years. Homer is survived by his three sons Dennis (Flo) Van Matre of Freeport, IL, David (Linda) Van Matre of Freeport, IL, and Darryl Van Matre of German Valley, IL; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brother Don; three sisters Ethel, Shirley, and Bernice; his son Don; and a grandson Jake. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday November 14, 2015 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport with Rev. Bill Blomberg officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home.
