Henry "Hank" C. Dewall

Henry C. '˜Hank' DeWall, 95, of Forreston, died Friday, February 22, 2013, at the Kahl Home in Davenport, Iowa. Hank was born on December 8, 1917 to Alfred and Margaret (Kruse) DeWall in Forreston, IL. Hank married Helen E. Thomas on May 1, 1946 in Mt. Morris in the Church of Brethren parsonage by Rev. Foster Statler. During World War II Hank served approximately five years in the Army where he was a Staff Sergeant with the 86th Illinois Infantry Division. He saw combat in Europe where he received the Bronze Star Medal during the Battle of the Bulge. He also was stationed in the Philippines at the end of the war. Hank was co-owner and operator of the Forreston Grain and Feed Mill with his brother, Onne, for approximately 25 years. He was also employed at Furst McNess in Freeport. Hank was a lifetime member of the Forreston Reformed Chruch where he served many years as an Elder and teaching Sunday School. Hank helped organize the Boy Scout Troop in Forreston and served on the Boy Scout committee. He also was charter member of the Forreston Fire Department where he was active for 18 years, a member of the American Legion, the Mount Morris Moose Lodge and served as a trustee on the Forreston Township Board. Hank is survived by his wife, Helen, children; Dorinda (Michael) Breakwell and Dr. Bradley (Kimberlee) DeWall, grandchildren; Megan (Brandon) Smith, Brittany Breakwell, Katherine DeWall, Kristina (Jeffrey) Romans, Anna DeWall, and Zachary (Jennifer) DeWall, great-grandchildren; Sophia and Gabriel Romans, and John Henry DeWall and sister-in-law, Eileen DeWall. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. Hank was predeceased by parents, sister, Martha, and brothers Onne, Joe, and Minert. Funeral services will be Thursday, 10:30 A.M. at Forreston Reformed Church, Forreston. Pastor Tim Fry and Pastor Jim Stralow will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday, 4:00-7:00 P.M. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston. Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery, Forreston. A memorial has been established in Hank'™s memory.
