Harlan J. Koberstein, 68, of Freeport, died Thursday July 3, 2014 at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, WI. He was born April 26, 1946 in Baraboo, WI, the son of Harlan and Marvel (Ruda) Koberstein. Harlan married Jean Koch June 9, 1968 in Pearl City, IL. Harlan was a teacher for 38 years retiring in 2006; he taught at First Ward, Jane Addams, and Blackhawk schools. He was a very active member of Freeport Elks Lodge 617. He was a member of the Eagles Club, Green County... ATV Club, the Winnebago Rifle Club, NRA, and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1968; He then received his masters degree from the University of Wisconsin. He was an avid Packer fan. He enjoyed target shooting, riding motorcycles, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. Harlan is survived by his wife Jean Koberstein of Freeport, IL; his sister Joan Sherwood of Aurora, CO; his sister-in-law Judith (Dennis) Thorn of Rockford, IL; two nephews Dan Thorn and Dale Thorn; his niece Shannon Barnes; and also great-nieces and nephews. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday July 8, 2014 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport with Rev. Bill Blomberg officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Monday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, with a Elks Lodge service at 7:00 P.M. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
