Grace "Gracie" Suggs

Gracie Suggs, 94, departed this earthly life on Thursday, December 2, 2021. She was born on September 25, 1927 in Hickory, Mississippi to Aaron Pruitt and Fannie (Tullos) Pruitt. She came to Freeport in 1947. Gracie married Aaron Suggs in 1951, together they raised six children. Gracie was a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church where she served as an Usher for many years. She was also part of the Kitchen Committee as well. Affectionately known by family and friends and the community as Mama Grace, Miss Gracie, and most importantly as Granny and Ma. She was very well known for her cooking and working in her yard and garden on the corner of Sheridan and Orin Streets for 50 plus years. Gracie worked as a cook for the Salter Restaurant and was one of the first lunchroom monitors at Taylor Park School. She was also a counselor for Head Start early on. She was also employed at Structo, Burgess Battery, and went on to retire from Micro Switch. Gracie leaves to cherish her precious memories, her four daughters: Barbara Hilton of Freeport, IL, Gwendolyn (Earl) Davis of Denver, CO, Matie Suggs (Robert Essix, Jr.) of Freeport, IL and Patricia McGowan of Freeport, IL. Sister, Willie Mae (Pruitt) Lenoir of Denver, CO. Brother, Rev. James T. (Ola) Pruitt of Denver, CO. Six grandchildren, Monica Suggs, Stacie Suggs, Corey (Rita) Hilton, Derrick (Kimberly) Hilton, Marcus Davis, and Stephanie Davis. Ten great-grandchildren, Devareaux Allen, Sheridan (Isaac) Threadgill, Vanessa Suggs, Xavier Hilton, Talia Hilton, Adonis Hilton, Armani Davis, Mahki Davis, DeSean Davis, and Roniin Johnson. Four great-great-grandchildren, Jahkai Threadgill, Harmoni Threadgill, December Allen, and A'Montae Miller. Gracie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Aaron W. Suggs, son, Aaron C. Suggs, daughter, Sheila M. Suggs, and three brothers, Alonzo Pruitt, Lenard Pruitt, and Thomas Pruitt. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday December 11, 2021 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, IL with Rev. Romero Stidmon officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service also at Burke-Tubbs.
