Fred M. Carrithers

Fred M. Carrithers, 93, of Freeport, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away in his home on Saturday September 24, 2016. Fred was born December 25, 1922 in Hudson, Illinois, the son of the late Henry H. and Mildred (Dunkin) Carrithers. Fred moved to Freeport in 1941 to work for the Illinois Central Railroad which he worked with for 43 years. Fred served for the United States Army in World War II from 1943-1946 serving in the 726th Railroad Operating Battalion in Northeast India. He met Dolores Grell in 1941 the same day he arrived in Freeport; she was the love of his life. They married on February 1, 1946 and two sons, Terry (Iola) Carrithers and Fred Carrithers; and daughter, Marla (Bob) Deans. Mrs. Carrithers died on July 21, 2007. He enjoyed hunting as a young man and fishing with the family and of course cheering for the Green Bay Packers. Surviving are son, Fred Carrithers; daughter, Marla (Bob) Deans; grandchildren, Shannon (Darin) Musser and Haley (Kyle) Getz; three great-grandchildren, Drake, Brea, and Charlotte Musser, and sister, Lois (Don) Hollingworth. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, Dolores; son, Terry; great-granddaughter, Chloe Getz; and sister, Nancy George. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday September 28, 2016 in the Chapel of Peace at Oakland Cemetery. Rev. Diane Jochum will officiate. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
